Capturing Motion

There are two approaches to capturing motion in an image. One is to freeze the action, such as the leap of a ballerina, the jump of a skier, and so on. The "frozen" subject is crystal clear. Another is to capture motion as a blur. A blur can convey high speed or it can be used towards artistic effect. This week my mission in the photography class I'm taking is motion blur. My first attempt is to create an artistic effect. You might think by looking at this image that all I need to do is have an unsteady hand. But it is not as simple as that. I had to dial in a correct exposure, one with a long enough shutter speed to allow me to zoom the lens while pressing the shutter. I took about 20 images before I got one that I like.
