For most of my travel life, I’ve been my own planner—researching destinations, mapping routes, booking hotels and flights, and seeking out unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences to complement the must-see sights. While I’ve occasionally joined group trips (like trekking in the Andes and Bhutan), I had never enlisted a travel advisor for a custom itinerary—until 2023, when I asked Jesse at Geographic Expeditions to design a two-week trip to New Zealand.

Neither Glen nor I wanted to navigate “wrong-side” highways, and we had some very specific interests, including a desire for unusual activities. Thanks to Jesse, that trip became one of the best I’ve ever taken. It was a revelation to have everything expertly planned, with a seamless itinerary guiding us each day.
When we booked a small-ship cruise from Los Angeles to French Polynesia, we decided to extend our stay for another six days in the region. Given how successful our New Zealand trip was, I sought out a specialist for French Polynesia—something outside GeoEx’s scope. But where to start? Friends of mine had raved about Wendy Perrin’s WOW List, so I turned to her recommendations.
That’s how I found Kleon Howe, a French Polynesia expert. After a conversation and some email exchanges, Kleon sent an itinerary that immediately showed he understood my travel style. When he suggested Vahine Island, I knew he had truly listened. High on my list of travel priorities is peace and tranquility, and Vahine Island delivered exactly that.
While our itinerary was simple, this trip was a test case for me—to see if the WOW List could be a valuable resource for future travel. Kleon exceeded expectations. He not only recommended a spectacular resort but also handled every logistical detail seamlessly. When our ship docked, private transport was waiting to take us to the airport, where our driver handed us air tickets and accommodation vouchers. Upon arrival in Raiatea, a Vahine Island representative met us and took us by boat to the resort. The return journey was just as smooth. One of Kleon’s best touches? He booked us a day room at the Hilton, allowing us to freshen up before our late-night flight back to the U.S.—a thoughtful detail I wouldn’t have considered but deeply appreciated.
Vahine Island Resort was so wonderful that I already want to return. But with 120 islands in French Polynesia, there’s so much more to explore. And when I do, Kleon Howe will be the person I trust to plan that journey.
