The Egg-Eating Stellar Jay

Today I was preparing a presentation on the Great Bear Rainforest for the AAUW and came across this image of a Stellar jay. The jay is on the bank of a river in which salmon are spawning. While bears across the river from this jay pull salmon out of the water, this jay gathers up spawned eggs. I saw a few other types of birds doing the same thing, but those birds seemed to be content grabbing one egg at a time. The jays, however, were greedier.

My home is in a forest setting. Stellar jays there are known to raid the nests of other birds and eat their eggs. I didn't know about their taste for salmon eggs until I visited the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada. (I processed this image using Topaz Studio to give it a painterly effect.)
